A book, Titan: Inside India’s Most Successful Consumer Brandwritten by Guidelines Sr Associate Editor, Vinay Kamath, and published by Hachette India, will be made into a web series.

Anish Chandy, founder of Labyrinth Literary Agency, said the audiovisual rights to the book have been awarded to a leading production house.

The book, with a foreword by Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, explains how a quintessential Indian brand from the Tatas house has risen to remarkable heights and market capitalization now only next to TCS in the Tata Group. The book was unveiled at the Tata Literature Festival in November 2018 and became a bestseller.

Based on in-depth interviews with past and present Titan executives, including MD founder, the late Xerxes Desai, the book chronicles Titan’s journey over the past three decades – from a business that rivaled the watchmaker HMT launching stylish watches in the late 1980s, and became an instant hit – until its transformation into a jeweler with Tanishq and youth brand Fastrack, and later forays into eyewear and sarees with Taneira.

While Titan is a very successful business today, there was a period in the 1990s when its initial foray into jewelry manufacturing did not do well, and it made a disastrous foray into the European market. with his watches being poorly accepted, leading to the company being heavily in debt.

The book lists the turbulent years, innovation and original thinking that helped turn things around, making it the success it is today. Pieced together from dozens of conversations, the book also contains a chapter on Titan’s iconic publicity and how a section of a Mozart symphony has remained Titan’s signature to this day, thirty years later.
